Newman is the Security Chief aboard the unnamed cargo ship from the second issue, It Came From Space!.

Like everyone on the ship, including the alien (but obviously not including Meaney or Llewellyn) he is actually is an actor in a reenactment of the first contact between humanity and an alien species.

Newman is named for Alec Newman, who played Paul Atreides in the miniseries adaptations of Dune and Children of Dune, although more people seem to think he is named for this character from Seinfeld.
