Thomas Meaney is a Trainee in the Lead Service. He is young, excitable, a little naive and fairly career-minded. He is also quite possibly the only person left in the Multiverse who believes mullets are fashionable.

Meaney is named after Colm Meaney, who played Miles O' Brien in both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His first name derives from the middle name of Next Gen character William T. Riker.

[edit] Personal History

Having trained at the Mimas Academy with Richard Llewellyn, he and a Transport ship full of other trainees went on a journey to the Hub where, quite by surprise, they discovered they would be embarking on the first Field exercises in "60 or 70 years". Meaney reacted rather enthusiastically to the news. Llewellyn, however, did not.

He and Llewellyn were placed under the wing of Captain Lucas who took them on their first mission and, like a true professional, got himself disintegrated by Deadly Deadly Robots. Upon returning to Lucas' JumpShip and pressing the Recall Switch, they discovered that the ship's Homing Pigeon Circuit no longer worked, and so pressing the switch would instead take them to a random position in a random Universe. Bugger.

After being held captive on a spaceship and briefly terrorized by aliens before discovering that the entire thing was just a hilarious misunderstanding, Meaney Llewellyn then jumped on. Some time between the end of Issue #2 and the start of Issue #3 they have visited a "Mafia World" and have also foiled the nefarious scheme of an alien criminal organization (although these may have been the same place). Llewellyn was shot while the pair were escaping, and the pair jumped out to another Universe quite conveniently landing on the roof of a hospital. While Llewellyn was being treated, Meaney encountered a parallel version of Ryder (see below).

[edit] Relationship with Llewellyn

Meaney's friendship with Llewellyn is a strange one. While Meaney is often on the receiving end of a lot of verbal abuse and mockery from his training partner, he still appears to trust Llewellyn's judgment and appears to consider him a friend. This is despite Llewellyn mentioning at least once that he would have no problems shooting both Meaney and his Goatee-Toutin' Doppelganger were such a confrontation to arise (although Llewellyn was probably just being cruel for the sake of it).

[edit] Family and other relationships

Llewellyn's Mother, who herself had been a Lead, had passed away by the time Meaney went into training. His Father was still alive, and presumably still is.

Meaney had been in a relationship with Ryder before becoming lost in the Multiverse. Before leaving for the Hub he spoke with her, and she said that, despite Meaney assurances, she somehow knew he would not be coming back.
