I have just been reminded of something rather hideous I saw while watching the Sci Fi channel on Friday - a trailer for the upcoming
Flash Gordon TV series. It goes largely without saying that I am not a fan of the original serials, nor of the decidedly camp movie of the 1980s. Most fans seem to fall into the "So Bad It's Good" school of thought when it comes to that film. I'm of the opinion that there is, in actual fact, no such
thing as "So Bad It's Good." Something is either good, or it's bad. There's no in-between. I think Yoda would agree with me on this one.
So I have already dismissed the new series as little more a Cash Cow; something to generate advertising revenue for NBC Universal (who own the Sci Fi channel in the US). My Dad's a fan of the 80s movie, but even he went "Oh,
WHAT?" when he saw the trailer. Time will tell, though. Science fiction revivals seem to be the In Thing at the moment, what with
Doctor Who and
Battlestar Galactica having made rather brilliant successful returns, as well as the first chapter of
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales due to hit DVD at the start of next year. Almost all of this appears to have come in the wake of
Star Trek's slow, lingering death.
Incidentally, I realise that the page-a-week update schedule isn't perfect for
Jump Leads. It is, however, the only viable update schedule at the moment. If you're looking for more regularly-updated humour, I'd suggest checking out
Rooms by Euan Mumford. The writing is utterly superb and, like myself, he's a huge Scifi geek.
