The "About" page for any webcomic has a lot of work to do. It has to outline the premise of the comic and the characters. If it's an ongoing longform comic like ours, it's also got to serve as an update of the story so far for people who either haven't read the comic before or for infrequent visitors who may not have any idea of where the story is now.
Previously we've done that entirely with text. Walls upon walls of text. But that's hardly an efficient method of getting the crux of the synopsis into the heads of new readers, and it doesn't give them any idea of what to expect in terms of artwork or the writing.
What we've done now is turn the "About" page into
a brief overview of the story in comic form using frames from previous pages of the comic. We've composited a recap of everything pertinent to the overall Jump Leads story, as well as a couple of excerpts from the comics' dialogue scenes in order to give new readers an idea of how the characters interact. It's a little bit like Battlestar Galactica's "3 Seasons in 8 Minutes" video that they put out prior to season 4, only it's nothing like that at all.
I've also slightly tweaked the character descriptions for Meaney and Llewellyn to reflect the people that they are now, as opposed to the people they were when the comic first started.
Our next plan is to revamp the Archive page. At the moment it's worthless - it's a bunch of numbers, and it doesn't offer any real way to navigate each individual issue. The plan is to eventually replace this with a "Chapter Menu" approach where you'll be able to see previews of pages at the start of key scenes, much as you would with a DVD.
This change is based on a suggestion posted on Webcomics.com (I can't find the blog post on the site to give the proper person credit - if you're reading this, thank you). I wouldn't presently be a member of Webcomics.com were it not for the aid of Joe Hills, part of the team behind
Jack of All Blades, so thank you to Joe for that as well.
And it's nice way to see the artwork evolve.
The art in issue 1 was absolutely awesome! But the art in issue 7 was even more absolutely awesome!
And the new issue is also filled with absolute awesomely awesome awesomeness!
Awesome!
