This is going to be an exciting year for scifi - arguably moreso than 2009. what have we got to look forward to? Well, here's a handy-dandy list.
Caprica The Battlestar Galactica prequel spin-off begins on SyFy later this very month, which is incredibly exciting for those of us lamenting the end of its parent series last year. I came to the BSG party very late in the game - just shy of the fourth season premiere - but I fell in love with the series, and I can't wait to see what they're going to do with this new series.
Doctor Who The Doctor regenerated on New Year's Day into a brand spanking new eleventh incarnation portrayed by the odd-looking but promising Matt Smith, but he's not the only thing about the show that's regenerating. A new Showrunner and Head Writer steps into the fold - the incredibly talented Steven Moffat, writer of fan-favourite and award-winning episodes "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Blink", amongst others. If the season five preview is anything to go by, this is an interesting time to be a Doctor Who fan.
Futurama Last year, Comedy Central announced that they'd commissioned not one but two new seasons of the animated scifi-comedy series, based on the sales of the DVD movies that were released over the last two years. While the films were largely hit and miss, I don't think anyone can argue with the show returning to its traditional half-hour format.
Red Dwarf Another scifi-comedy that's made something of a return - last year's "Back to Earth" mini-series was the highest-rated cable broadcast of all time, beating the record set by the premier of Torchwood two years prior. Fans and critics seem torn as to whether or not the show was any good - personally, I loved it - but it's been "officially unofficially" announced that the show will be returning later this year for a full season (well, "full" for a British sitcom, which is about six episodes).
The Phantom He's had a ropey time over the last couple of decades, what with a questionable animated series and a bloody awful movie adaptation, but it's impossible to deny the impact that The Phantom has had on the world of comic book superheroes. This year, SyFy is set to broadcast a TV series based on the comic book, which will either be absolutely fantastic or completely horrific. That said, it's nice to see someone having a crack at bringing the character back to a wider audience... even if purple isn't strictly speaking a fantastic choice of uniform colour.
Sherlock The return of Sherlock Holmes to the big screen was one of the highlights of the Christmas movie season so far as I'm concerned, but I'm much more excited about this contemporary take on the character. Doctor Who alumni Mark Gatiss and, again, the wonderful Steven Moffat work their magic and bring the titular character into the 21st century, with a Watson who's returning from the war in Afghanistan. I can't wait.
Iron Man 2 Oh, doesn't it look spectacular? I never expected to be as bowled over by the first film as I was, and this one looks like it might outdo Robert Downey Jr.'s first romp in that metal suit of his.
Predators They're making another Predator movie, and it's supposed to be coming out this year. Will it be any good? Well considering it's a semi-reboot that follows on from the first film and totally ignores both Predator 2 and the Alien Vs. Predator films, it seems to be off to a promising start.
Alice in Wonderland I don't like Tim Burton and I've become rather irritated by Johnny Depp's presence in his movies. I can't say I'm impressed or enthused that the titular Alice hasn't appeared in any of the promo posters I've seen for this movie (except, oddly, for the one on the film's Wikipedia article), given the shunt in favour of Depp's Mad Hatter. It seems like a horrible, horrible choice on the part of Burton, or the marketing team, or possibly both. That said, my love for Lewis Carroll's Alice novels knows no bounds, so I will probably end up going to see this film anyway - even if he does utterly trash it like he did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
BioShock I don't expect this film, based on the 2007 videogame of the same name, to be anywhere near as impressive as the source material it's based on. But we can live in hope. And while we're on the subject of videogame movies, how about...
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time The same creative team behind the Pirates of the Caribbean films are behind this, which I reckon bodes well for this. A film based on The Sands of Time has the potential to be very, very good indeed, and I can only hope it lives up to the hype.
Reckon I've left something out? Why not post a comment and share with us?
