SoulGeek Webcomics

One of the joys of attending an event like Comic-Con is that you get to spend a little time discussing comics and such with your peers. I had an interesting, albeit brief, conversation with Kris Straub about the Lead Service.

A couple of months ago I started plotting out a possible crossover between our respective scifi-comedy webcomics. Despite the fact that Jump Leads is contemporaneous and that Starslip is set in the distant future I reasoned that a crossover would work because, simply put, the cluster of Universes that make up Starslip could just be older - they might occur in a Universe where the Big Bang happened a few years earlier than our own.

But I began postulating with Kris about the Lead Service. What they do, what they will become, and it occurred to me that maybe they would eventually become either the Terran Consortium, Esquigent (the company who developed Starslip technology), or have involvement in both. Maybe the Jump Leads timeline - contemporaneous as it is - eventually becomes the Starslip timeline.

Kris knows his stuff, though. He pointed out that the Lead Service are pretty damned advanced considering it's only 2009. By the time Starslip technology is developed, it'd be far more likely for the Lead Service to have moved on to something bigger. He suggested that the Lead Service would be more inclined to become Deep Time.

That's a very interesting idea, isn't it?

Why can't you commit to just one Universe?

I think there are multiverses within multiverses (maybe we'll call them omniverses to keep things clear)

so it goes 37 Universes=1 Multiverse, 37 Multiverses= 1 Omniverse (or however many you want to cram inside) and the laws of physics are different inside each omniverse, including the art style of what it's creatures look like, and whether or not super powers run rampant. It is much trickier to cross between multiverses than Omniverses, the walls are much thicker and well constructed. That's why crossovers are such events.

While I think Deep Time could have evolved from the Jump Leads service, you yourself are very fond of pointing out the Leads don't travel through time, and I think it's fair to say another, better funded organization will be established to do that, and become deep time. I think Time Travel is possible in some Omniverses and not in others, depending on how malleable their space time is.

Or something.

You look down and see a tortoise, Michelle. It's crawling toward you...

I have to admit, their goals of "keep everything the way we think it should be" do seem to fit pretty well. If Deep Time is an amalgam of several different timelines, I could see the Lead Service being a pretty big influence.
