Our very first Comic-Con has been and gone and I have to say it was a wonderful, magical, fantastic, exhausting experience. We completely sold out of the limited print run we did of
Training Day, and we sold about three quarters of our stock of
Jump Leads Volume 1: Tales From The Flurry. You have no idea just how utterly jazzed I am about that. I even managed to hold myself together when some fans actively came seeking me out - I think I'm getting better at this whole "Convention" lark.
I have a lot of really fond memories to take away with me this year. From meeting Billy West and getting bearhugged by
Penny Arcade writer Jerry Holkins, to having
The Simpsons and
Futurama creator Matt Groening ask me to sign his copy of Jump Leads Vol.1, from sharing a booth with the charming
Richard Hatch to meeting
Torchwood stars Naoko Mori and John Barrowman, both of whom asked for a copy of Jump Leads Vol.1.
I owe a great many people thanks for helping us get to Comic-Con this year, and I shall resist listing them all for fear of being unable to stop, but we wouldn't have been here at all were it not for the generosity of Dino and Casey at
SoulGeek. It can be very difficult trying to promote two different things from one booth - a scifi-comedy comic and a geek dating service - but somehow we made it work without stepping on each others' feet. I am indebted to them for letting me share the booth, for helping me to get the first book published, and for generally being supportive, loving, and downright awesome people. They're going to have a baby in a few months and I'm trying to convince them that Benjamin is a strong masculine name for a boy, although after seeing me get very girly at Comic-Con I'm sure they believe otherwise...
I'd also like to thank Ang, Pat, Adam and my Mum back in England for all of their efforts getting my books back into the US from the UK. We'd ordered books to be sent to England for the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing earlier this year and they didn't arrive in time for the convention. Ang, Pat and my Mum worked very hard to ensure everything was in order to get them sent back to the US for me, and Adam helped out by providing them with the correct UPS labels. You guys are all awesome. Thank you.
What have I taken away from this year's Comic-Con? Well for one thing, I think I really shine in conventions. My pitch has improved vastly over the last two years and I really want to be out there selling the book again. It's a shame I'm already going to PAX this year otherwise I'd be all over DragonCon. I'm debating whether or not to make this year's PAX my last... which is a painful decision to make as it's probably my favourite gaming convention all year. E3 be damned.
And finally, my heartfelt apologies to
Scott Kurtz. I didn't bring my dragon shirt with me this year so we didn't get the opportunity to bump dragons. When I told him I hadn't brought it I saw the anguish, the sheer despair in his eyes. I am sorry, Scott. I hope that in time you will learn to forgive me.
