A few people have emailed me to ask whether Newman is named after the Seinfeld character of the same name. He isn't - he's named for Scottish actor Alec Newman, who appeared in SciFi's Dune miniseries back in 2000, and in its follow-up miniseries Children of Dune (both, of course, based on Frank Herbert's novels).

Characters in the comic are almost always named after actors, writers, directors, etc. who have had an involvement in the scifi genre in any medium. I won't give any more of these away... you'll just have to guess them for yourself!
